Elles van Gelder graduated with a bachelor degree in journalism at the University of Professional Education in Utrecht and a master in Modern History (with distinction) at the University of Amsterdam.

She moved to South Africa in 2007 to work as a freelance foreign correspondent focusing on features and telling in depth stories. Her writing has been published in Dutch and international media, including The Telegraph Magazine (UK), Time Magazine (US & international), Vrij Nederland (The Netherlands), L’Espresso (Italy), dsWeekblad (Belgium), OneWorld (The Netherlands) and NRC Handelsblad (The Netherlands).

She is the correspondent for Belgium public radio station VRT and works for Dutch public radio (NOS/VPRO/BNN).

Finally she produces and shoots features for several tv-programmes. (Metropolis TV - EenVandaag).

Believing in the power to merge her skills to tell a story, she produced and filmed a short multimedia documentary on a racist boot camp for young white South Africans together with photographer Ilvy Njiokiktjien. For this story, titled Afrikanerblood, they won the World Press Photo Multimedia Award 2012, The Picture of the Year International (POYI) Award in the category Multimedia Issue Reporting and the Lumix Multimedia Award 2012.
